Galatasaray Spor Kulübü (Galatasaray SK, or Galatasaray Sports Club) are one of three major teams based in Istanbul. Galatasaray is the most successful club in the history of Turkish football, having won more trophies than any other Turkish club. Galatasaray holds the best international record by a Turkish team as well. They became the first Turkish club to capture a major European title beating Arsenal of England in the UEFA Cup final during the 1999–2000 season and also won the Super Cup when they beat the UEFA Champions League winner Real Madrid in the final.

FC Schalke 04 hail from Gelsenkirchen in the densely populated industrial heartland of Germany’s Ruhr Valley. Founded on 4 May 1904, the club boasts one of the largest support bases in Germany.

FC Kaiserslautern hail from the city of the same name in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of southwest Germany. On 2 June 1900, Germania 1896 and FG Kaiserslautern merged to form a new club, FC 1900. In 1929, the team underwent another reincarnation, merging with SV Phönix to become FV Phönix-Kaiserslautern, which was simplified to the current name three years later.

Clube Atlético Mineiro, who hail from Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, were winners of the maiden Brazilian Championship in 1971. Founded in 1908, they have also won the Conmebol Cup (the competition which was latterly replaced by the South American Cup) in 1992 and 1997, as well as the Brazilian Champions Tournament (contested by winners of the country’s various state championships) on two occasions, first in 1937 – the first time that the competition took place - and then in 1978. They have also won the Minas Gerais state championship on 39 occasions.
